Whether you’re an artist, advocate, freelancer, filmmaker, none or all of the above, this workshop will help you effectively tell a story through audiovisual media. We will cover the fundamentals of constructing a strong, clear narrative and hooking your audience. Taught by Larry Engel, a professor at American University with nearly 40 years of teaching and filmmaking and 250 projects under his belt, this workshop emphasizes the power of visual storytelling by making the most out of the tools you have.

About the Instructor: Larry Engel’s documentaries appear on PBS, the Discovery Channels, and National Geographic, among many other outlets. Awards include a Daytime Emmy for Best Cinematography and the Mountain Spirit award from Mountainfilm in Telluride. His teaching focuses on theory, production and emerging media. This year, his film Who Speaks for Nature, was entirely shot on a smartphone and will be featured at the DC Environmental Film Festival and the San Francisco Latino Film Festival.

July 15th – 26th: Summer Filmmaking Intensive
Level: All levels
Age: 7th grade and up

Our two-week Summer Filmmaking Intensive was a huge success! Students spent 10 days at our Digital Media Lab learning about the process of making a video.

By day four, the kids were already shooting on manual after a cinematography crash course, and by the end of the week, they had each worked on three different film projects. We were awe-inspired by their creativity and focus throughout the camp.

Our teachers, Bradley Smith and Alyson Spery, designed the curriculum beautifully, tapping into the potential of every student and tricking them into having fun at the same time. We knew we had done something right when one of the students described post-production sound design as ‘super cool.’ Thanks to our brilliant teachers and students for a wonderful pilot program!
