June 2, 2010 - Last Colter Wonder Club!
We celebrated our last Wonder Club by playing our favorite games and exploring the banks of the Snake River. After playing some serious rounds of Camouflage we walked to the river and wandered the riverside trails.
Ciara and Sarah tried building a stone bridge across a small river channel while Quaye, Josh, Camille, and Sophie found lots of bugs on the large rocks. Rayne & Analeise watched a killdeer protect its nest site's shoreline, and Garrison looked for morels. Millie and Katie enjoyed throwing rocks into the river, and Gabe checked out the river's current by throwing wood into the rivers flow.
Wonder Club was a HUGE success, and I look forward to Wonder Club Wednesdays at Snow King this Summer!

May 26, 2010 - Fort Building along the Snake River
We decided the sunny afternoon of May 26 was a PERFECT day to dedicate our afternoon to fort building and outdoor shelter design!
Mike, an instructor with Colter's Kids Club taught us safe building techniques and creative use of natural materials. Some groups utilized existing secret areas in the woods to use as a shelter, while other groups built their forts from scratch.

May 19, 2010 - Snake River, South Park Bridge Access
The Snake River access south of town has been our favorite place to Wonder after school. We started the afternoon looking for tracks to cast, but the recent rain had erased many tracks from the river banks. Participants were so engaged with the riverside landscape, we decided to explore the willow covered islands of the braided Snake River.
May 12, 2010 at the South Park Feedgrounds
After arriving at the South Park feedgrounds Wednesday, we quickly made our way across the meadows to an area filled with old cottonwood trees. This beautiful area is managed by the Wyoming Game & Fish department and provides great wildlife viewing opportunities and easy access to the Snake River. The cottonwood trees and rolling meadows provide especially good areas for playing and exploring.
We completed "Meet A Tree", an activity that focuses on sensory memory where participants are guided to a particular tree while blindfolded. Once at the tree, the blindfolded person uses their senses to gather information about the tree. Once their partner guides them back to the start area and the blindfold is removed, they must try and relocate their tree.

Wonder Club - Wednesday May 5, 2010
This week we explored the South Park feedgrounds, finding picked over elk carcasses and lots of wildlife debris from the long winter. Our activity focused on discovering different physical environments in a natural area. Students identified specific needs for wildlife in the area, and searched the landscape for wildlife clues.
We saw a Great Blue Heron, several white pelicans, Canada geese, a Red-tailed Hawk, and listened to the calls of songbirds nearby.

Center of Wonder - Wonder Club Wednesdays with Colter Elementary!
The Colter Elementary School "Wonder Club" will be playing in a natural area near you!
Each Wednesday we'll be out exploring the valley, looking for wildlife and learning to ask deeper questions about the natural world. We'll build forts and fairy-houses out in the woods, hiking and tracking wildlife, and playing games that highlight nature. We'll visit a different natural location each week, rain or shine, exploring the landscape, while sharpening our naturalist skills.
